Vanilla Ice is still set to perform at UFC’s upcoming White House event on the South Lawn in Washington D.C., even as several other artists have pulled out over political concerns involving President Donald Trump.
Bret Michaels and Martina McBride are among the musicians who have withdrawn from the UFC event, which is part of a broader UFC takeover in the capital featuring activities and musical performances tied to something referred to as Freedom 250.
Michaels explained his decision in a statement, saying, "Unfortunately, what was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of," and added, "Concerns have also been raised regarding the safety of my fans, band, crew, family and myself, including threats that are completely unfounded and unforgivable. Because of that, I have made the difficult decision to step away from this performance."
Vanilla Ice, however, has taken a different stance, saying, "I’m not going to get dragged into that," and, "I’m here to party with America. Music is made to bring people together. That’s what we’re here to do. We’re just going to represent the 90’s. I don’t take anything too serious. I don’t think anyone else should. I think that we should just dance." He also stated, "If Biden called…I’d go play," and, "It’s not a big thing. You play for your fans. I’ll go play for Putin. I’ll play in Iran if you want. It don’t matter. There’s fans everywhere."
Trump has indicated he is prepared to give a "major speech" in response to artists canceling their appearances, and has referred to some as "third rate artists."
