Ronda Rousey made a blistering return to competition on Saturday night, submitting Gina Carano in just 17 seconds with an armbar in the main event of MVP MMA 1.
The bout headlined the first MMA event promoted by MVP and featured two pioneers stepping back into the cage after long absences. Rousey had been away from MMA for about a decade, while Carano entered the fight having not competed for 17 years.
The card also delivered several notable results. Mike Perry defeated Nate Diaz in a bout described as one-sided and bloody, while Francis Ngannou scored a knockout win over Philipe Lins. Salahdine Parnasse defeated Kenneth Cross and was praised as a standout performer on the card.
Not everything was straightforward, however. The matchup between Adriano Moraes and Phumi Nkuta ended in controversy over a late submission and the officiating by Herb Dean.
As the MMA landscape continues to shift, one word from Heck seemed to capture the tone around MVP MMA 1: "disrupt."
