Peter Fury believes UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has all the tools to make a successful switch from MMA to boxing if he ever chooses to make the move.
Fury, who previously coached Tyson Fury to victory over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, revealed he worked closely with Aspinall earlier in his career and even oversaw his lone professional boxing bout. “He had one pro fight with me from maybe 2015 or something,” Fury said.
“I can’t remember the exact times, but he was in the gym with us, and he spent two or three years with us training, and he really developed his boxing skills with us. So I regard Andy and Tom Aspinall as part of my team because they are. He’s done a lot with me, Tom, and his dad back in the day. We’re probably three or four years together,” Fury explained.
Fury praised Aspinall’s physical tools and movement at heavyweight. “Tom Aspinall’s got super fast arms,” he said. “He’s quick. He’s agile. For a man at 18.5 stone, 117 kilos. The speed and the way he moves is phenomenal. So could he do something in boxing? Yeah. It’s probably a similar story to Rico, really. He could definitely do the transition because they’ve all been around me for years in boxing.”
“So yes, the transition for Tom Aspinall will be pretty easy. And do I think he can do big things? Yeah. For sure.” Aspinall, however, currently plans to focus on MMA and has two fights remaining on his UFC contract, which auto-renews due to a champion’s clause.
