The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board has issued 17 medical suspensions following UFC 328, which took place Sat., May 9, 2026, at Prudential Center in Newark.
Newly crowned UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland received an indefinite suspension pending orthopedist clearance on his left hand, along with a 45-day suspension that includes 30 days with no contact. Strickland won a split decision over Khamzat Chimaev in the UFC 328 main event to claim the middleweight title.
Flyweight champion Joshua Van was also handed an indefinite suspension pending orthopedist clearance on his left hand and a 30-day suspension with 21 days no contact. Van defended his flyweight title for the first time at UFC 328 by knocking out Tatsuro Taira in the fifth round.
Taira received one of the longest listed terms on the sheet: an indefinite suspension pending physician clearance for a CT head scan, plus a 90-day suspension with 60 days no contact due to a TKO.
Several fighters emerged from the Newark card without medical suspensions, including Alexander Volkov, Sean Brady, King Green, Ateba Gautier, Yaroslav Amosov, Joel Alvarez, Pat Sabatini, and William Gomis.
The event’s report notes that lengthy medical suspensions are often precautionary, and fighters may return to competition sooner once they obtain the required medical clearances.
