Michael Chiesa Sees Gaethje vs. McGregor as ‘The Matchup to Make’ After UFC 329

Michael Chiesa believes a potential Justin Gaethje vs. Conor McGregor showdown could be one of the biggest fights the UFC can book if McGregor is victorious in his comeback at UFC 329.

McGregor is scheduled to face Max Holloway in the UFC 329 headliner on July 11 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and Chiesa thinks the stakes could extend far beyond that night. "Let's say Conor McGregor beats Max Holloway, what better fight is there to do right now from a viewing standpoint?" Chiesa said on "The Bohnfire" podcast with MMA Junkie senior reporter Mike Bohn.

From Chiesa’s perspective, Arman Tsarukyan is the leading sporting contender for Gaethje, but McGregor represents the bigger business play. "Arman Tsarukyanis the next guy, for sure. … Conor McGregor vs. Justin Gaethje, if Conor beats Max Holloway – does it get much bigger than that right now? That is the matchup to make in terms of bringing in eyes. It's the only thing that can compete with the White House, is Gaethje and Conor."

Chiesa also pointed to McGregor’s contract situation and outside interests, noting McGregor has confirmed he will have one fight remaining on his UFC deal after UFC 329 and has involvement with BKFC. "If he beats Max, they're going to do everything in their power to not let him go," Chiesa said, adding that a Gaethje bout would also be major business for the lightweight champion: "For Justin, that's going to give him the payday that he wanted."
