Joshua Van retained his flyweight title at UFC 328 with a controversial fifth-round referee stoppage against challenger Tatsuro Taira.
The Burmese-American champion was attacking late in the fifth round of their scheduled five-round title fight when the referee stepped in to wave it off. Taira, the Japanese challenger, was not unconscious at the time and reacted angrily to the decision.
Two judges had the fight scored 2-2 heading into the final round, adding to the stakes around the late stoppage in Van’s first defense of the flyweight belt.
The bout was billed with the simple tagline: "The Best".
