Jamie Siraj Takes Short-Notice UFC Winnipeg Fight After Near-Death Ordeal

Jamie Siraj is set for his UFC debut on short notice at UFC Winnipeg, accepting a bout with John Yannis after emerging from a life-threatening medical battle that stretched over several years.

Siraj’s health issues began around 2019, with headaches, stomach problems, fainting, high heart rate, and high blood pressure. "Doctors said nothing was wrong. Meanwhile I was fainting, heart rate at 140 daily, blood pressure at 194/115. I had to become my own advocate. It drove me mental. That lack of belief hurt deeply."

He was diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis and later systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), and his condition worsened. "I had severe stomach issues, was put on immune suppressive drugs that made me sicker. A truckload of health problems followed." A severe septic skin infection on his face led to surgery and intensive treatment. "Doctors said it was the worst skin infection they’d ever seen. I signed a waiver to be studied. When my face got infected, it finally showed people something was truly wrong."

Siraj dealt with recurring infections for about a year, became antibiotic resistant, and required constant monitoring, IV antibiotics, and sedation. "I became antibiotic resistant. ... I was as close to death as close as you can get."

An immunologist eventually secured monoclonal antibody treatment, partially funded through a GoFundMe, and Siraj’s health began to turn. "I felt normal for the first time in years," he said, later returning to competition in June 2023 and winning a fight after previously being septic and in a coma. He went on to win five of his next six professional bouts, leading to a short-notice call from UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby to face Yannis in Winnipeg.

Looking at his path to the Octagon, Siraj believes his struggles have forged him for this stage. "I already went through my adversities. I already went through the battle-tested fights. I already fought UFC-caliber opponents and beat them. Not to mention after going through what I have with my health, there's not many situations you can put me in in life that I'm gonna freeze or choke over. I'm so ready for this moment."
