Islam Makhachev has weighed in after Ilia Topuria lost his UFC lightweight title to Justin Gaethje by TKO via doctor’s stoppage in the main event of UFC Freedom 250.
Topuria’s first career loss came in Round 4, with the fight taking place at the White House in Washington. Following the defeat, Topuria was transported to the hospital.
Reacting publicly, Makhachev posted: "He who exalts himself will be humbled ! There’s levels in this game! Congratulations Justin, you deserve this belt more than anyone!"
Topuria had been pursuing a super fight with Makhachev leading into UFC Freedom 250, even being willing to move up to welterweight. Makhachev, however, said Topuria priced himself out of a potential matchup.
Makhachev’s first title defense has not yet been announced, with indications pointing to Ian Machado Garry in August. Topuria entered UFC Freedom 250 at 17-1 in MMA and 9-1 in the UFC, while Gaethje came in at 28-5 in MMA and 11-5 in the UFC. Makhachev currently holds a 28-1 MMA record and 17-1 in the UFC.
