Islam Makhachev Opens as Big Favorite for First Welterweight Defense
19-06-26

Islam Makhachev is a heavy betting favorite for his first UFC welterweight title defense against Machado Garry, set for Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.

FanDuel lists the reigning champion at -390, with Garry installed as a +280 underdog for the matchup, which will be broadcast or streamed on Paramount+.

Makhachev captured the welterweight belt by defeating Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 in November, after previously defending his UFC lightweight title four times before vacating it. He enters this defense with a 28-1 professional record and a 17-1 mark in the UFC.

Machado Garry secured his No. 1 contender spot with wins over Carlos Prates and Belal Muhammad, the latter coming at UFC Fight Night 265 in November. The former Cage Warriors champion brings a 17-1 professional record into his first UFC title shot, including a 10-1 record inside the promotion.
