Georges St-Pierre has weighed in on Islam Makhachev’s upcoming title defense against Ian Machado Garry, set to headline UFC 330 on Aug. 15 at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.
Makhachev is scheduled to defend his title while attempting to secure his 17th consecutive UFC win, a mark Garry has openly targeted by stating he is certain he will stop the champion from breaking the consecutive wins record.
St-Pierre expects a compelling clash of styles. "I think it's going to be a good fight," he said, highlighting Garry’s danger on the feet and Makhachev’s dominance on the mat. "Ian Garry is definitely a tough opponent, a very good striker. But Islam, once again his goal is going to be to bring the fight to the ground. I think if he's able to do that, he's going to have an edge. If Ian Garry is able to keep it on the feet, Ian is going to have an edge. So it's going to be interesting."
For St-Pierre, the champion’s versatility is a key factor. "Islam has the edge in terms of skills because he's more well-rounded. He can do it all, especially with his grappling. He's got an edge in that department and I think that's what he's going to try to go for."
Makhachev enters UFC 330 with a 28-1 MMA record and 17-1 UFC record, while Garry holds a 17-1 MMA record and 10-1 UFC slate. St-Pierre also floated a possible future for the champion, saying, "Maybe he will eventually go up to middleweight, try to do the three weight class club," as anticipation builds for Philadelphia’s main event.
