Dustin Poirier has publicly responded to Jon Jones’ show of support following Poirier’s recent arrest for public drunkenness in Clayton County, Georgia.
Poirier was arrested by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office two weeks ago and has since deleted all of his social media accounts. In the aftermath, Jones — a former UFC dual-champion — publicly defended Poirier over the incident.
"He didn't hurt anybody," Jones said, later adding, "You know, he was drunk. We've all been drunk. Alcohol makes you do silly things. It's important for him to forgive himself and just keep moving forward. At the end of the day, no one really cares. No one really cares."
Poirier said he learned of the support second-hand. "My buddy, Kyle, the guy who I work out with everyday, he told me that Jon Jones came out and said something, and it was positive," Poirier said, also noting kind words from former fighter Matt Brown. "He said Matt Brown as well, a former fighter, did a video, and he said it was really nice. I'm sure I'll see some of that stuff. I don't want to relive the moment that much. I don't want to keep diving back. But when I do get back on social media or do start watching videos, I'm sure I'm going to see some of it."
Poirier made clear he is taking responsibility for the incident. "I appreciate everybody, but I'm not looking for sympathy or to make this OK. It's not OK. It's not," he said, adding that he is now focusing on his mental health.
