Dustin Poirier has spoken publicly about his recent arrest for public drunkenness in Georgia and the personal issues he says were on his mind that day.
Poirier was arrested two weeks ago by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia and faces one count of public drunkenness. Police footage of the incident showed Poirier provoking a police officer to a fight and confronting several airline workers.
Poirier says the incident began while he was traveling to work on Father’s Day and started drinking at the airport as he thought about his father. “On Father's Day, I was traveling to work, and I just couldn't stop thinking about my father, and I started drinking at the airport, and that's what led to the incident,” Poirier said. “Not that my father or anything is an excuse – obviously, I did what I did.”
He described his father as an alcoholic who is currently homeless. “If I could paint a picture of what you could think of classic drunk or alcoholic: (He's) very selfish and continues to go back to it. He's actually homeless right now,” Poirier said.
Poirier said he has not watched the arrest footage. “To see myself in that condition, disrespecting police officers, disrespecting workers at the airport, disrespecting myself, disrespecting my family, I just don't feel like it's going to benefit me seeing that,” he said.
Poirier added that the fallout has already hit his wallet. “One big one isn't a sponsor anymore. I'm sure I've lost a few (sponsors). ... That day cost me not only embarrassment and embarrassment to my family, it cost me a lot of money, too.”
