Conor McGregor’s return to action at UFC 329 ended in injury, as Dana White confirmed the former champion tore his ACL in his rematch against Max Holloway.
The knee injury occurred in the opening moments of the fight while McGregor was throwing a jumping switch kick. White said McGregor is now headed for surgery and a lengthy recovery.
“ACL,” White stated, adding, “His knee is f*cked up.” He continued: “He’s having knee surgery. That’s it,” and emphasized the long road ahead: “The Conor McGregor discussion isn’t even worth talking about. He’s got to have knee surgery. He’s going to have to go through physical therapy. It’s all going to take time. And then when the doctor says you can start hardcore training again, then we start talking about Conor McGregor again.”
McGregor had been out of action for much of the past five years due in part to a leg break against Dustin Poirier, and the UFC was previously targeting an April date for his final fight on his current contract. A torn ACL is described as likely keeping McGregor out for nine months to a year, and White said it is too early to speculate about when or where McGregor will fight next.
