Conor McGregor has made his preference for a comeback opponent crystal clear after suffering a leg injury at UFC 329: he wants Max Holloway.
McGregor, who still has to undergo surgery following the injury that ended his UFC 329 fight after 66 seconds, stated that Holloway is the only opponent he wants for his next bout. His next appearance will also be the final fight on his current UFC contract, and he believes the result of his UFC 329 fight should be changed to a no-contest. As McGregor put it, "It has to be Holloway,".
UFC CEO Dana White, however, is in no rush to entertain that matchup while McGregor faces surgery and recovery. Asked about McGregor’s callout, White responded, "Not even thinking about it," and added, "Conor still has to have knee surgery and go through everything he’s going to have to go through. I understand he’s very unhappy with the way shit played out but you’re a human being, you’re older, you haven’t fought in five years and Father Time is undefeated."
White emphasized that both McGregor’s health and Holloway’s trajectory will determine whether the fight ever materializes. "So who the f*ck knows what’s going to happen with Max over the next year and what’s going to happen with Conor over the next year?" he said, explaining that he won’t move forward until McGregor is fully cleared: "When Conor reaches out and says ‘I finished all my physical therapy, I’m in a good place, they told me I can train full time now,’ we’ll start thinking about what’s next."
