Andrew and Tristan Tate remain jailed in Miami as the United Kingdom pursues their extradition on rape and human trafficking charges, with U.S. authorities holding the brothers without bail while the case moves through federal court.
The British extradition request will ultimately be decided by Secretary of State Marco Rubio after court proceedings. U.S. Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis held an initial hearing on July 20 and scheduled another hearing for July 27. The Tate brothers, who hold dual U.S. and U.K. citizenship, were arrested by U.S. Marshals on July 18 on an extradition warrant.
Their attorney Joseph McBride said the brothers are being held in solitary confinement in a 5-foot-by-12-foot cell. “Solitary confinement is torture,” McBride said, adding, “We’re working to get them out of there as soon as possible.” He also stated, “Because the case is being handled as an extradition matter rather than a criminal complaint, bail is not available.”
The United Kingdom’s Crown Prosecution Service recently announced additional charges against the Tates. Malcolm McHaffie said, “We have decided to prosecute Andrew and Tristan Tate for further offences including rape, arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation and offences relating to indecent images of a child,” noting, “These charging decisions followed receipt of a further file of evidence from Bedfordshire Police and bring the total number of alleged victims in this case to seven.”
These new counts are in addition to 21 original charges, including rape and human trafficking, bringing the total charges against both brothers in the United Kingdom to 59.
